Why do we insist on coupling the word 'advance' with 'technology'?
"Recently I stayed at the revamped Sydney Hilton. My wife teaches hospitality management and we were looking forward to spending some time in Australia's newest five-star hotel. The Hilton uses Cisco IP (internet protocol) phones that are like little computer terminals. It had a little screen with a menu. I saw I had eight calls in my message system, four of them from the concierge. This seemed odd, as I had only just booked in, so I rang the concierge and asked him. He asked me to look at the phone's screen display and at the time the messages had been sent. I saw that they were from the previous day. The concierge explained that the messages were obviously for the previous guest.
"When I looked more closely I found that the previous guest's unanswered calls displayed, and so were the phone numbers of all the calls he had received and those he had made. This seems to me to be a breach of privacy and of security.
I tried a few of the phone's other functions. Something called "Magic" kept appearing which, when I inquired at reception, was described as the "hotel's call centre". Nice personal touch, that.
"My phone insisted on telling me I was booked out, so I rang Magic and a nice young man came and looked at my phone. He explained that Magic was an acronym for "monitoring all guest's incoming calls", but he couldn't get my phone to accept that I was booked into the hotel...."
